Robin K. (Rob) Johnson


Rob Johnson is a Principal of Dakota Plains Development, and Dakota Plains Energy. Rob is an original founder of the company and splits his time between the Nisswa, MN and Aberdeen, SD offices. He has over 30 years experience in business and commercial development and ownership. Rob has been involved in many national professional and local civic organizations, along with his church, often serving on the Board of Directors. He is a proud graduate of Northern State University, continued his education at the University of Pittsburgh (PA) and obtained his Masters in Development at St. Thomas University in Minneapolis.

Rob grew up operating, owning, then eventually divesting the family business, Carquest Auto Parts of Aberdeen, SD, which grew to the 5th highest volume of 2,500 Carquest stores in the country under his watch.  Recently, Rob has been involved in over $52 million of transactions, primarily in the commercial real estate brokerage sector and originally became a licensed Real Estate Broker in 1977. He has also been involved in many businesses and development projects as an owner, investor or partner. Along with his commercial development projects in South Dakota and Minnesota, today Rob also oversees Dakota Plains Energy, focusing primarily on renewable energy projects in the upper Midwest.

Heath Johnson


Heath Johnson is a founding Principal of Dakota Plains Development, Inc., and Dakota Plains Energy, Inc. Johnson offices out of Aberdeen, SD, where he lives with his family. He has over 15 years of business management and ownership experience, to go along with his development and commercial brokerage work. Heath graduated with a Management degree from the University of South Dakota, and has gone on to complete his Master’s in Business from USD. He currently sits on the Board of Directors for the Dacotah Prairie Museum, Aberdeen, Sertoma Club,YMCA Aberdeen, United Way of Northeastern South Dakota and is a member of the Aberdeen Planning & Zoning Commission. Heath splits his time between our Aberdeen Downtown housing/redevelopment projects, and Dakota Plains Energy’s renewable energy projects in the Midwest.



Nicole Johnson joined the team in 2015 after spending 20 years traveling the country for her career.  She works alongside the team to help connect local entrepreneurs with finding the right location for their business.  She also connects with local entrepreneurs through many organizations that she volunteers with.  She decided to move back to South Dakota in 2015 to be near her family.  Although that time may be limited, she will continue to educate, market, and grow the rural community that she resides.  Come see her each week at 1 Million Cups Aberdeen @The Capitol Theater on Main Street.
